During OIF and OEF deployments, 3/8 has suffered many casualties. Many 3/8 veterans have suffered visible injuries from Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and Small Arms Fire. However, many have suffered invisible wounds, such as Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Not all these Marines have an opportunity to connect with other veterans, not to mention their 3/8 brothers, and help cope with their war experiences.
PTSD is one of the main issues that has plagued the veteran community. PTSD is something that all combat veterans deal with daily, and it can sometimes lead a veteran on to a path of despair and helplessness. This can result in substance abuse or even suicide, and since 2008, 3/8 has lost many of its brave Marines to both. Many veterans felt alone and distanced from their civilian friends and families as they dealt with these issues. Our founder, Bart Skiba, experienced similar problems and recognized that the support from his 3/8 brothers-in-arms helped him deal with many post-combat issues.
In 2008, Bart started the 3/8 Weapons Company Reunion for those who served in Fallujah and Ramadi, Iraq. These reunions quickly grew and assisted these Marines to combat PTSD, and other injuries, through closure, support, and a healing environment, which allowed us to recognize those who required help, whether it was emotional, physical, or financial. Many of our veterans expressed their feeling about these reunions to Bart and attributed their recovery to these reunions, which showed them they were not suffering alone.
Since then, we have expanded our assistance to other 3/8 Companies and units. We wish to continue Bart’s tradition and provide financial assistance in reuniting 3/8 companies annually. We have sponsored and organized the 3/8 Weapons Company Reunion (2003-2009) for the past 15 years. Please help our goal and contribute to helping reunite these veterans.
